On 2 June 2017 (98th Session) – MO adopted Resolution MSC.428(98).
Maritime Safety Committee stated that all companies should include approved SMS the cyber risk management according to the objectives and functional requirements of the ISM Code and to ensure that cyber risks are addressed in the SMS no later than the first annual verification of the company Document of Compliance after 1 January 2021.An increased internet connectivit through the increased availability of affordable VSAT communication leads to increase risk of cyber incidents (according to Maritime VSAT Report : Market size increases from 10,000 vessels to 51,000 vessels requesting for VSAT comms). Existing PCs onboard are often outdated and are networked with no added safety protocols (OS not updated, anti-virus not installed or not updated). Onboard, dedicated cyber security procedures and adequate crew training are often lacking (Users not adhering or not equipped with cyber security awareness). This course addresses the lack maritime cyber security awareness amongst maritime personnel ashore and afloat.
